Damaged hair is generally caused by chemicals in shampoos and soaps, climate (hot and dry), use of blow dryers and stylers, swimming, stress, exposure to UV rays and sometimes underlying health conditions like thyroid. Including nutritious foods in diet is one way to reduce damage. Here are some excellent home remedies that will help you get over damaged hair.

1. Honey

You can apply raw organic honey mixed with water directly to your hair. Being an emollient, honey makes the hair naturally soft and smooth. Its antioxidant properties improve the health of the scalp and boost hair growth. It is also a humectant that prevent loss of moisture from hair and scalp thereby reducing hair fall. Its antiseptic and antibacterial properties prevents infectious diseases like psoriasis as well as dandruff. Damp your hair and apply this mixture to hair. Leave it on for half an hour and rinse off with warm water.


2. Aloe Vera

Being a natural humectant, aloe vera proves to be really beneficial for the hair. It contains amino acids, and essential vitamins E and C for promoting good hair growth. It also contains enzymes. Aloe vera has strong antibacterial as well as antifungal properties that remove dryness and itchy scalp – the two most prominent signs of damaged hair. You can apply aloe vera juice on your scalp directly or make an aloe vera hair mask by adding 4 tablespoonfuls of aloe vera gel with 2 tablespoons each of coconut oil and yogurt. Apply this mask thoroughly on your hair. Let the mixture remain still on hair for half an hour and then wash off.

Avocado contains plenty of hair-friendly nutrients such as fats, protein, natural oils, vitamins and fatty acids. Applying avocado paste on your hair will keep it hydrated and increase its flexibility. Avocado also gives protection from free radical damage. It is highly effective against unwanted hair fall. Extract the pulp from one avocado, add one teaspoonful of olive oil to it and mix them in a blender. Apply the mask to your hair, leave it on for an hour and wash off.

Olive oil renders much needed moisture to your hair’s cuticle. Loaded with vitamin E, fatty acids and antioxidants, olive oil shields your hair against further damage. Olive oil is particularly effective against split ends and dandruff. Warm some olive oil and apply it gently to your hair rubbing the scalp and shaft with fingers. Massaging will improve blood circulation which in turn will lead to healthy hair growth. Leave the olive oil on for half an hour by covering it with shower cap. Wash your hair with mild shampoo.

This flower has been used since time immemorial to improve hair growth. Hibiscus enhances moisture content in hair’s cuticle and leaves the hair shiny and voluminous. Hibiscus also delays greying of hair. To prepare a damaged hair remedy with hibiscus, grind four hibiscus leaves and two hibiscus flower petals and apply the paste to your hair. Leave it on for around 30 minutes and rinse off.


6. Coconut Oil

This age old remedy is rightly considered to be the cure to every hair woe. Coconut oil penetrates deep to the hair roots and nourishes hair shaft from within. Lauric acids in coconut oil increases its affinity to keratin and hence coconut oil penetrates deep into scalp and shaft. This prevents the cuticle from damage through external factors. Apply coconut oil to your hair and massage thoroughly at least thrice every week for better results.

High in potassium, bananas provide immense energy to our bodies. Interestingly, bananas are also good for your hair for the same potassiu.m content. In addition, bananas contain vitamins, natural moisture content and oils that enhance the hair’s elasticity and make it soft and smooth. Prepare a banana mask for your hair by mashing up two ripe bananas and mix it with coconut oil, olive oil and honey. Apply this mixture thoroughly to your hair and leave it for sometime. Wash it off and repeat this process once a week.

8. White Vinegar

White vinegar has cleansing properties that kicks off built-up residue from your hair and protects the cuticle. It also helps maintain natural pH level of your scalp thereby promoting hair growth in a healthy manner. Mix a cup of white vinegar with water in 1:3 ratio.
